The Pathetic Premises and Argumentation of “The Communist Manifesto”

Pathetic. Pitiful. Contemptible. Unbelievable. These are the words that come to mind as I try to come up with a way to describe the world-view reflected in The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. It is so bad, so naïve, so poorly argued that I do not think it deserves to be taken …

CBMW’s Assessment of the NIV 2011

The Council for Biblical Manhood and Womanhood has put together an evaluation of the NIV 2011. The full report is here, and the data that supports the conclusions can be found here. The takeaway: The 2011 NIV is 75% the TNIV in gender language, and it effectively nullifies 1 Tim. 2:12, the most important verse …

Are You Telling the Truth or Cheating?

What do I mean by cheating? Manipulating evidence so that it says what you want it to say to get people to do what you think they should do, even if that’s not what the Bible tells them to do. Making bad arguments on the basis of bogus statistics that you then use to prey …

Osteen’s Response to Mohler and Driscoll

This is funny, sad, and a telling commentary on Osteen, all at the same time: Mohler? Driscoll? “I don’t know who those people are,” Osteen says, looking genuinely mystified. Source.

Payne’s Refusal to Deal with the Complementarian Position

I mentioned in an earlier post that in his book, Man and Woman, One in Christ, Philip B. Payne refuses to present the complementarian position in a way that complementarians would represent themselves. This seems to be because Payne has so thoroughly rejected the complementarian position that he feels no need to argue against it …

ANET Is Now Affordable

Charles Halton notes that the newly published paperback version of the widely cited ANET makes accessible a resource that has retained its value: “In this fast-paced world, scholarship—even in old and dusty fields like ancient Near Eastern studies—has a relatively short life span. Each year new texts are unearthed, new interpretations are offered, and existing …

Can Egalitarians Tolerate Complementarians?

Working on my review of Payne’s Man and Woman, One in Christ, it became clear that for Payne, and probably for many egalitarians, the issue of women in ministry is a moral issue that is closely linked to civil rights. To be clear, I think the Bible teaches complementary roles for men and women (here …

Review of Philip B. Payne’s “Man and Woman, One in Christ”

Man and Woman, One in Christ: An Exegetical and Theological Study of Paul’s Letters. By Philip B. Payne. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2009, 511 pp, $29.99 paper. Published in Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, 54.1 (2011), 177–79. Israel never had female priests. Jesus did not name any females as apostles. Peter instructed wives to submit …

In Defense of Rob Bell, A Guest Post by Bill Z. Bull

Here’s a Book My Wife and I Need

My sweet wife and I have had a number of conversations lately about shepherding our children as they begin to engage technology, and this includes what we model for them. We need discernment in this area, so I’m eager to see the book that Tim Challies has written on the issue, The Next Story. Here’s …

John A. Broadus on the Duty of Teaching Baptist Distinctives

The most recent issue of the Towers publication from SBTS reproduces a condensation of a pamphlet John Broadus wrote on “The Duty of Teaching Baptist Distinctives.” If the link doesn’t go straight to the article on the PDF, it’s on the lower third of page 5 (Towers, January 3, 2011). I’ve copied and pasted it …

What Did Wells and Vanhoozer Do?

From the interview on the CBD Academic blog: Matthew: In your book, you state “this book, quixotic as it may seem, seeks to do for biblical theology what Kevin Vanhoozer has done for Hermeneutics and David Wells has done for evangelical theology” (38). Can you unpack this statement for us in direct relation to your …
