Earlier this month I presented a paper to the Biblical Theology Study Group of the Tyndale Fellowship arguing that when Matthew claims that the events of Jesus’ birth "fulfill" the words of Isaiah 7:14 he is referring to typological fulfillment. If you’re interested, the essay is posted here. May the Lord help us to understand his Word.
Thanks for posting this, Jim. I’m preaching through Matthew 5:17-20 next, which I believe hinges on our understanding of Matthew’s use of “fulfill.” I remember preaching through those first two chapters of Matthew. Apart from typology, I think its hard to make sense of “fulfill”, especially when used of Scriptures that weren’t apparently “predictive.”
I’ll look forward to reading this.
