    If those government programs for the poor actually worked, no one would be more in favor of them than we who are evangelical Christians. We would be celebrating them from the housetops.

    However, LBJ began all these social programs with the War on Poverty in 1965–more than 50 years ago. These programs have been dismal failures. They have not in fact improved the lot of the poor. They have left them no better off than, and in some cases worse than, they were in 1965. What sort of sane person would champion these programs? What sort of Christian would champion these programs?
