  1. Dr. Hamilton,

That looks exciting! What a lineup. I hope to join tomorrow.

I wanted to say that I’m enjoying your work on the Holy Spirit. I appreciate the redemptive-historical aspect of the work. I’m not quite sure about your exegesis on Eze 36:26-27, but you yourself said that your thesis doesn’t rise/fall based on that interpretation.

One other thought is how you described the law being written on the heart in the New Covenant. While what you said is true about the indwelling nature of the Spirit in the New Covenant I think the language used is an idiom for covenant faithfulness and not specifically the outpouring of the Spirit. Yes, it’s true that by the outpouring of the Spirit covenant faithfulness will be maintained, but I think it’s important to notice that Jeremiah is contrasting covenant unfaithfulness (31:32b) with covenant faithfulness (31:33c). Here is a quote that revolutionized my understanding of that passage (blogged about as well).

“Also relevant at this point is the idea of the new covenant in Jer 31:33, where the new covenant is defined in terms of God writing his law on the hearts of the people of Israel, which would cause eschatological Israel not to break covenant with God again (Jer 31:32). Thus, God’s law in the heart is in effect an idiom for obedience (see Ps 40:8). The thinking underlying the idiom seems to be that God’s law, which comes from the outside through external revelation, needs to be internalized within the heart, and as it becomes internalized in the heart (Matt 15:19)–the person with God’s law in the heart acts in obedience to God.” [Coxhead, Steven R. “Deuteronomy 30:11-14 as a Prophecy of the New Covenant in Christ.” WTJ 68 (2006): 309.]

I like the work so far. It’s cool to have someone who wrote the book interact with you while reading!
